The Future of Heart Surgery

Understanding TAVI

When the main valve of the heart becomes severely calcified and fails to open (Aortic Stenosis), a new valve is absolutely critical to survival.

Historically, this required breaking the breastbone, stopping the heart, and performing high-risk open-heart surgery. TAVI changes everything. Using a small catheter inserted through an artery in the leg, we can deliver and deploy a fully functional, biological replacement valve directly into the beating heart.

For many patients, this means avoiding major surgery entirely and recovering in days — not weeks.

No Open Surgery

Performed while the heart continues to beat normally, without large incisions.

Rapid Recovery

Patients often sit up within hours and are discharged within 48 to 72 hours.

High-Risk Savior

The safest, most viable option for elderly patients who cannot survive traditional surgery.

TRIC Valve Implantation

Tricuspid valve regurgitation is often called the "forgotten valve" disease, leaving many patients suffering from severe swelling and heart failure with very few options.

Dr. Panda is one of the few pioneers in the region successfully placing the Bicaval TRIC Valve system. This intricate procedure involves deploying two specialized valves in the superior and inferior vena cava to prevent backflow and dramatically relieve right-sided heart failure symptoms—all done entirely through a peripheral vein.

Structural Heart FAQs

TAVI is primarily recommended for older patients or those with multiple medical conditions that make open-heart surgery extremely high-risk. Because it avoids cutting the chest open and stopping the heart, the recovery is dramatically faster and safer for these vulnerable populations.

The new replacement valve is crimped down into a tiny size inside a delivery catheter. We gently guide this catheter through an artery in your leg, thread it up into your heart, and then expand it directly inside your old, failing valve using a balloon. The new valve pushes the old leaflets out of the way and takes over functioning immediately.

The TRIC system is designed for severe tricuspid regurgitation (where the valve separating the right chambers of the heart leaks massively, causing severe blood backup). We place valves in the large veins outside the heart, effectively blocking the backward flow of blood and relieving debilitating swelling in the abdomen and legs.

Remarkably short compared to surgery. Most patients are awake shortly after the procedure, sitting up by evening, walking the next day, and discharged within 2 to 3 days. Full daily activity can usually resume in just a few weeks.

Absolutely. Precise positioning is critical when deploying a valve into a beating heart without opening the chest. We rely extensively on advanced echocardiography and intra-operative fluoroscopy parameters to ensure the new valve anchors securely and seals correctly.
